Webnames.ca director and partner John Demco is a true innovator and visionary. Besides being instrumental in setting up one of Canada’s first Internet connections in 1988, he also founded the .CA domain extension in 1987.
John’s vision was securing a unique identity for all Canadians on the Internet (at a time when no websites even existed-the web was invented in 1989).
John voluntarily managed the .CA Registry, setting policies and framework, implementing systems and procedures as well as processing registrations, updates and changes for all .CA domains for 13 years, charging absolutely no fee for his services. By 1999/2000, about 100,000 .CA domains had been registered and he was processing registration or update requests at the rate of about 5000 per month. He did this on top of his full time job as the Facilities Manager of the Computer Science Department at the University of British Columbia.

The .CA domain space is recognized by Industry Canada as a “key public resource” for the benefit of all Canadians, a legacy that John made possible with his foresight and innovation.
John continues to serve on the Board of CIRA. Over the years, the company has expanded its services from one domain extension (.CA) to hundreds of domain extensions, SSL certificates, web hosting, email services, and web development.
